When you search in Google Maps, business show up with those red flag markers that link to entire pages about them. Even more importantly, Google places these map listings at the top of even normal old searches if it thinks you are looking for something local. If you don't have a listing that appears in map results, you are missing out on the chance to appear at the top of certain search results. Most people, most businesses do not have map listings yet. So you are competing against far fewer people compared to the usual search results because most websites get crawled by google just by sitting there, making the competition for the standard search result much more difficult. All you need to do to get your own is create an account with something called Google Places. So what are you waiting for? Yesterday, Google announced a new feature called Instant Preview. On the surface, it is a simple addition to their still fairly new feature , Google Instant. For anyone who hasn't noticed this yet, Google now presents search results as you type, guessing ahead about what your going to type and showing results on the fly. They have also added map results to the equation. If you are searching for something location based the first half of the page is taken up by map listings, which are taken from Google Places. Once upon a time, it was only necessary to have a website. Then blogs became important. Now you need to think about social media with tools like Twitter and Facebook. If your business has a second or third off-shoot with its own site and own blog, you could easily have 4 or more places to login and update. Add to that an order fulfillment service or payment gateway and all the social media sites… That’s too much.
